People often ask me: Where are you from”? and when I answer “Dakar, Senegal”, they look surprised. They want to know more: well, I am Lebanese, French-educated and my family has been living in Africa for the past 4 generations. This multicultural background taught me a lot about diversity, tolerance and non-judgment. It has also shaped me to become a very curious and open-minded person.

Sonia Sharara Said Certified Life Coach

I was born and raised in Senegal, studied in France and came back to Senegal in my mid-twenties where I started my career in Marketing and Sales for multinational companies, travelling across Africa and working on building international brands.

When, in 2014, my family and I moved to Accra, Ghana, I didn’t know that I was about to experience the most difficult time in my life. Neither did I know that I was about to grow the way I did.

For five years, I successfully led the family business, growing it like never before. I was married with three children and I was making a comfortable income. I had it all, or so you might think looking from the outside.

The truth is, on the inside, I was deeply unhappy and unsatisfied with my life. Emptiness, lack of meaning combined with frustration, anxiety and stress were how I felt on a daily basis. It took me quite a long time to realize that I was not living my life on my terms.  I was living a life that had been designed for me. A life that would allow me to fit in, to be accepted in society and that won’t shake social norms or conventions.

But I was suffocating. I was feeling like I was in a cage and I couldn’t find my way out.

Yet, somewhere inside of me, I knew that I could

So I started my Quest, exploring therapy, coaching, books, podcasts. At the same time, I also made one of the best decisions of my life: I decided to invest in myself and travelled the world to attend world class seminars and pretty soon, it opened my eyes to a world of possibilities

Not only I realized that I was not alone on this journey but also that I didn’t deserve just “getting by”; I learnt that I did not need to feel this miserable. It was in my power to navigate what my path to happiness and fulfilment would look like. As I began turning things around, I found myself and discovered my SPARK and the passion I had been lacking.

My turning point was at a week-long coaching seminar where I finally understood that I had been driven by safety, comfort and certainty my entire life and that these values were the very reason why I was feeling so stuck in a career and with life choices that were not fulfilling me, but that were giving me the security I deeply needed.

When I became aware of these unconscious choices, I felt empowered to take back control of my life and redefine it on my own terms. This meant being ready to embrace another part of me I had suppressed for too long and that was craving for adventure, risk, and freedom.

In my core, I have always known that being a Life Coach was part of my DNA and I was finally ready to overcome my fears and open my heart to my soul’s purpose.

On the last day of the seminar, I made a deal with myself. I decided to make a shift in my career, leaving my safe job in the family business and take the leap into the unknown to start living the life of my dreams: Become a Life Coach.

I can boldly say that coaching transformed my life at every level and most importantly, helped me to reconnect with my SPARK.
